We’re thrilled to share our latest adventures with you! We recently arrived in Motshane, Eswatini, where we were warmly welcomed by our dear friends, Dr. Lewis and Maggie Chomba. The Chombas are Zambian missionaries who have dedicated their lives to serving the community through various ministries, including pastoring a church, running a care center for orphans and vulnerable children, a preschool, a feeding program giving 600 meals to kids each week, and a farm. Dr Lewis is also the President of Eswatini College of Theology. They are pillars of faithfulness on their steep hill and the entire community is blessed by them! We have known and loved their family for almost 2 decades and have seen dozens of children grow up in the Hope House Care Center.
We haven’t done as well as we would have liked at staying in touch all these years, but when we are together, it feels like no time has passed. We arrived in Motshane, Eswatini on Friday afternoon and I shared a quick kid’s message, and we played with the 120+ kids who came for a free after school meal at Hope House Care Point.
On Saturday morning, Dan was given a chance to share in the chapel service at the theological college on ministering to people with addictions and it was a massive success. We are discussing whether we could be a part of teaching in the spiritual emphasis week next year and how the college could add in a class on ministering to the addicted somehow. Despite the rainy, chilly day, it was a brilliant morning.
Lewis took us all to see the improvements at Hope House Farm which is primarily a piggery and they also have quite a few other animals (goats, chickens, turkeys) as their source of meat for all their different ministries.
They are stewarding their resources well and stretching everything as much as possible, but they do need more of us to come alongside and help them financially. They currently do not receive any money from the government for the 7 extra teens they have living with them at Hope House Children’s Home. They pay out of their own finances for feeding all those big boys as well as their school fees and more. The preschool they opened has so many children attending who are impoverished and not able to pay any tuition, so the teacher isn’t receiving a salary right now and they support her as they can through food donations. Despite the financial challenges, they are constructing another building to be able to have more children attend their preschool.
The family’s primary home needs a few upgrades and quite a few repairs are needed at the Care Center. There are 8 cabins which are the bedrooms and then a larger all-purpose room which is used as a kitchen and living room. These buildings were constructed around 25 years ago and some maintenance and upkeep are essential to make sure they will continue to be usable for years to come. The living room roof blew off in a storm and damaged the interior and electrical. The exterior needs some waterproofing and a new coat of paint, they need a water tank, a pressure pump, a few windows need some glass, and some of the beds for the children need replacing.
What they need most of all is your prayers! Please will you lift up Lewis and Maggie and all the teens they are currently caring for? Will you ask the Lord to richly bless them and give them deep rest and spiritual refreshment? Please pray that the teens will come to know and love Jesus as their Savior and Lord. Please also pray for abundant provision for their ministries and for new financial partners and monthly donors to rise up. Perhaps you can be one of them?! We would also love to take teams to Eswatini in the future – it would be a brilliant place to do a bunch of work projects and also to love a LOT of kids!
Dan and I are working in partnership with Hope House and our friend Simone to create a new website for them. Hopefully it will be ready soon and then donations can go directly to their account. In the meantime, if you would like to send money now, you can donate to Magezi Ministries and put HOPE HOUSE on the memo line and we will forward it to them.
Just after our weekend in Eswatini, we took a few days off at the Indian Ocean to rest as a family and that was so life giving! We were as far north as we could get in South Africa (5km from the Mozambique border) and it was warm and quiet and beautiful. It was just what we needed.
Since we’ve been back in Bethlehem, Dan has preached 2x for the Sunday morning service for the students at New Horizon College and last Sunday 4 students received Jesus as their Savior for the first time and around 45 of them rededicated their lives to the Lord. It was AMAZING!!!!! We are working in partnership with their hostel parent Joseph to do some follow up and discipleship now. Dan has also taught 3 weeks at the addiction recovery ministry at Bambalela and we have some new connections and invitations with Social Development workers. We are also back on the Caritas College Campus and teaching devotions to the students there are Thursday mornings. Dan has all the high schoolers and I have grades 1-4.
(there are many more videos and pics on social media)
We also had some Joburg friends come and visit us on two different weekends and had a wonderful time reconnecting and resting together. Dan and Andre went to a men’s camp together in Underberg and metal detected all the way home. Gaye, Kaylene and I got massages and talked for hours and hours. It was just what our hearts needed.
We are heading back to the States in less than two weeks now. It will be a very short visit – less than 4 weeks long. We will primarily be in Seattle, and will have one long weekend in Portland, OR. We are happy to get to hug our family again and hope to see many of you as well. Dan is preaching at Journey Church in Federal Way, WA on September 7th and there will be a lunch following at Leo and Lisa Heider’s home. If you can join us – we would love to see you. Please consider this your official invitation! Please send me an email for more details.
We also need a bit of help with some practical details for our time in the states – we would love to borrow a vehicle for the 4 weeks we are home so that Dan and I can go different directions for the day. Also, Grandpa Don has several grandchildren living with him currently and the house is full! We would love to borrow an RV that we could park next to his house so that Titus and Miesha could stay in a mobile bedroom near us while we are in town. If you have a vehicle or RV we could utilize – we would love to borrow it from Sept 5-28. Please email me at Janell@magezi.org if you can help. Thank you!!
Dan and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary this week and it was a bit of a bummer because we were both sick. No cute couple pics yet! Ugh – we will celebrate a little later when we are feeling better. Titus turns 16 years old this coming Sunday and we look forward to celebrating him and two other friends who also have birthdays this week by having a huge group of teens at our place today for a combined birthday party.
Our friend Michelle Hughes is with Pampered Chef, and she is hosting a fundraiser for Magezi Ministries this month. If you place an order with her before the end of August, a portion of the sale will come to us. Feel free to email me for more info or go to my Facebook page for the link. It’s never too early to start your Christmas shopping!
We are again collecting phones to bring back to African pastors. If you have a phone to donate, please let us know.
Thank you all for your love and prayers and support of our family and ministry. Specifically this week, please pray for restored health for us, for all the remaining details to come together for our USA visit, and for safety as we travel.
With joy,
Janell for all of us
